Two Safeway employees walked the strike notice in on Sept. 15.

One has more than 50 years with the company, out of the Capilano store. The other has two years, out of Westbrook.

Half a century and a rookie season. Same piece of paper. The union’s president called the younger one “the new face of the workplace.” Put those two side by side and you have the whole bargaining unit in two people.

A notice starts a clock.

That paper lets a walkout start at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Thanksgiving Monday falls on Oct. 12. Anybody who has cooked for a crowd knows exactly what those five days are for.

Key facts

  • United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 served strike notice on Sobeys Inc. covering Alberta Safeway stores on Sept. 15, 2026, with the earliest possible strike at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2026, according to the union’s release that day.
  • UFCW Local 401 reported on Sept. 12, 2026, that its Alberta Safeway members voted 87% in favour of a strike in Calgary, above 90% in Edmonton, and 86% in the retail bargaining unit.
  • UFCW Local 401 reported a 79% Alberta Safeway strike vote on June 29, 2020, followed by a new agreement ratified with 90% support on Aug. 10, 2020.
  • Thanksgiving Day is an Alberta general holiday set on the second Monday in October, which is Oct. 12, 2026, according to the Government of Alberta’s employment standards page.

Both sides spent nearly a year at the table

The union says bargaining ran nearly a year. Mediation ended without a tentative deal.

Union president Thomas Hesse says his members want “a fair agreement that allows them to support their families.” Sobeys, for its part, has told its own staff it is working toward a “fair, market-competitive deal.”

Good. Everybody agrees on the word fair. That’s more than most folks at a family dinner manage.

The members mean it, too. Calgary came in at 87%. Edmonton cleared 90%. A few other Alberta cities went past 95%. The retail unit went 86%, which by our arithmetic is 8 points above the 78% the same retail members gave back in 2020.

And 2020 is worth remembering. The overall vote was 79%. No picket line went up. A mediator put recommendations on the table, members voted on a deal in August, and it passed with 90%.

So a big strike vote in Alberta doesn’t have to end on a picket line. It has ended at a ballot box before.

Why a Thanksgiving strike date lands on everybody at once

This summer we watched a strike vote run into the August long weekend. Same move, bigger dinner.

Nobody here is blaming the people who work the tills, the meat counters or the back room. Their notice is legal. So is the company’s right to hold its number.

A grocery strike in the first week of October is weather you can see coming from three counties away. Everybody in this fight has been watching that sky since spring.

The timing is the problem. Both outfits had most of a year to sort this. They skated two full periods and now want to settle it in the last minute with the goalie pulled, on the one week a family buys a turkey, a sack of potatoes and three kinds of pie.

The Safeway worker loses a paycheque if it goes. The shopper loses a store. The company loses the biggest grocery week of the fall. Every person in that list would rather have the deal than the fight. Talks were booked for Edmonton this week, and there are still enough days on the calendar to finish the job like adults, before a single line of pickets goes up in a parking lot.

Sign it before the turkey starts thawing.

Frequently asked questions

When could Alberta Safeway workers go on strike?

United Food and Commercial Workers Local 401 served strike notice on Sobeys Inc., covering Alberta Safeway stores, on Sept. 15, 2026. The notice sets the earliest possible walkout at 12:01 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2026. In votes reported on Sept. 12, 2026, members voted 87% in favour in Calgary, above 90% in Edmonton, and past 95% in a few other Alberta cities. The retail bargaining unit went 86%, which is 8 points above the 78% the same retail members gave in 2020. Does the strike notice mean a strike is certain?

No. A notice starts a clock; it does not start a walkout. The law requires only 72 hours’ notice before strike action can begin, and the union gave more, with talks booked in Edmonton the same week the notice was served. If a tentative offer is reached, members vote on it before any strike, and nobody in this fight wants one: the worker loses a paycheque, the shopper loses a store, and the company loses the biggest grocery week of the fall.

What happened the last time Alberta Safeway workers took a strike vote?

The June 29, 2020 strike vote came in at 79% in favour, and no picket line went up. A mediator put recommendations on the table, members voted on a deal in August, and it passed with 90%. Union president Thomas Hesse says this round’s members want “a fair agreement that allows them to support their families,” after nearly a year of bargaining and mediation that ended without a tentative deal. Sobeys says it is working toward a “fair, market-competitive deal.”
