These standards govern everything Alberta Tribune publishes, on the website and on our social channels. They exist so readers know what to expect from us and how to hold us to it.
Accuracy and sourcing
- We verify claims before publication and prefer primary sources, including government releases, regulatory filings, statistics agencies, official reports, earnings releases and public statements.
- We attach dates, figures and named sources to factual claims wherever we can.
- We distinguish clearly between what is confirmed, what is disputed and what is still developing.
- We never invent facts, quotes, statistics, timelines or public reactions.
- We do not present older material as new. Where a story is an update on an earlier one, we say so.
Opinion and fact
Alberta Tribune publishes both reporting and opinion. Opinion columns argue a position and are labelled as opinion. Reporting sets out what happened and what the evidence supports. We do not blur the two, and we do not use reporting to smuggle in an argument.
Independence
Editorial decisions are made by Alberta Tribune. Advertisers, sponsors and partners do not review or approve editorial content before publication, and no coverage is sold. Any sponsored or partner content is labelled as such where it appears.
Fairness
Where a person or organization is criticised on a matter of fact, we make a reasonable effort to reflect their position. We quote accurately and in context, and we do not use a quotation to say something its author plainly did not mean.
Corrections
When we get something wrong we fix it and we say that we fixed it. See our Corrections Policy.
Use of artificial intelligence
AI tools may be used to assist with research, drafting support and production tasks. Every published piece is reviewed by a person, and responsibility for accuracy rests with Alberta Tribune. AI is never used to fabricate quotes, sources, images of real events or reader comments.
