Calgary tells most of its business stories through pipelines, towers and trading floors. Dr. M. Elizabeth Cannon built her legacy pointing at something higher: the satellites that reshaped how the world navigates, builds and does business. In 2022, she was inducted into the Southern Alberta Business Hall of Fame, a recognition that places her engineering career alongside the region’s most influential builders, and one that says as much about Alberta’s ambitions in science as it does about her own.
From the Geomatics Lab to the President’s Office
Cannon’s rise did not begin in an executive suite. It began in the lab, where she became an expert in geomatics engineering, the discipline that measures and maps the physical world with precision. As her Junior Achievement Southern Alberta laureate profile lays out, her research put her at the forefront of Global Positioning Systems work starting in 1984, across both industrial and academic settings, at a time when GPS technology itself was still finding its footing. That early focus eventually carried her into leadership roles at the University of Calgary, first as dean of the Schulich School of Engineering, then as president and vice chancellor from 2010 until 2018. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, and an elected foreign associate of both the National Academy of Engineering and the Mexican Academy of Engineering, a rare distinction for any Canadian researcher. In 1998 she was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40, and in 2006 the Women’s Executive Network placed her among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women. Five universities, including the University of Toronto, SAIT and the Universite de Montreal, have granted her honorary degrees. In June 2019, Cannon was named an Officer of the Order of Canada, and in 2021 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Axis Connects Calgary Influential Business Awards. Still Investing in the Next Generation
Cannon has not slowed down since leaving the university presidency. She currently serves on the boards of Mancal Corporation, Canadian Natural Resources Limited and the Rideau Hall Foundation, giving her a hand in both Alberta’s energy sector and national philanthropic work. She is also a Fellow of Creative Destruction Labs Rockies and sits on its Strategic Advisory Board, mentoring entrepreneurs and acting as an active seed-stage investor, with a particular interest in female-founded companies.
