Mike Broadfoot has built companies in energy, software, medical devices, financial services and property, and sold several of them to buyers well beyond Calgary. In 2024 that record put him in the Southern Alberta Business Hall of Fame.
A founder across five sectors
According to his Junior Achievement Southern Alberta laureate profile, Broadfoot has been a founder or early-stage principal investor and director of companies in energy, B2B software, medical devices, financial services and property development. Engage Energy was sold to Duke Energy in 2002. Peyto Exploration and Development is still operating in Calgary. Solium Capital was sold to Morgan Stanley in 2019, and Cority was sold to Thoma Bravo the same year.
Each of those sectors has its own regulators and its own investors. Working across all of them is the unusual part of the record.
Building the urban core and backing new software
His current ventures include JEMM Properties, a Calgary developer focused on densifying the urban core, and two technology companies, Leankor and Quantifi. Property and software are different bets, but both tie him to the growth of the city he works in. He backs companies at the early, riskier stage.
Community work beyond the boardroom
Broadfoot sits on the board of STARS, the air ambulance charity, and on the board of CAWST, which works on water and sanitation. He is also a partner and mentor with Creative Destruction Labs Scale-Up. He and his wife Jacquie have two adult children and like to travel, often by tandem bicycle.
A career measured in repeat exits
The Hall of Fame recognizes breadth, and Broadfoot’s record shows it. He builds, sells and moves to the next sector, and he keeps a hand in Calgary’s charitable life while he does it. A single exit is a good outcome. Several of them across unrelated industries is a method, and Calgary’s next founders can study it.
