Corus confirmed layoffs at Global News this week, with changes reaching screens in the coming weeks. That much is official. Reports citing company insiders describe the larger move. News production in Calgary and Edmonton winding down and shifting to Toronto, with the transfer finished by the end of August.

The reporters stay. The camera crews stay. What leaves is everything that decides what you actually see. The control rooms, the producing, the anchor desks. The people choosing what leads the six o’clock news in Calgary would sit two time zones east of the city the news is about.

A Short History Lesson for the Head Office

Some context for whoever drew this org chart. Calgary’s Global station signed on in 1954 as the first television station in Alberta. Until 2022, that same Calgary operation ran master control for all 15 Global stations in the country. Edmonton’s control rooms once produced newscasts for Montreal and the Maritimes.

Alberta did not merely appear on the network. Alberta ran the network. In the good old days, which in this case were four years ago, the entire country’s Global feed passed through this province on its way to air.

What a Control Room Knows

Defenders of consolidation will say production is plumbing, that a rundown is a rundown wherever it is assembled. Anyone who has worked a local newsroom knows better. The producer decides that the water main break in Bowness leads over the press conference. The person cutting for time knows which overpass closure actually strands people. These are judgments made from lived geography, by people who have driven the Deerfoot or the Henday in January and understood, in their hands, what that means.

A Toronto control room will get the pictures right and the priorities approximate. Approximate is the difference between local news and news about a place.

Half True, Going on Fully True

Albertans have grumbled for decades that Canadian media is run from Toronto. It was always half true, and the half that was false lived in those Calgary and Edmonton control rooms. By September, if the reports hold, the grumble graduates to a simple description of fact.

The audience will notice. Audiences always notice, slowly, then all at once, usually around the time a station wonders where its viewers went. They went looking for someone who knows which bridge is out.

Would you notice if your local newscast stopped being local? How long would it take?
