Monique Barrie’s first business was a paper route in Northern Ontario, where her father ran a logging operation and worked as a mechanic and welder. She was eight years old. The job was never really about the papers. It was about the seniors on her route who wanted five minutes of conversation more than they wanted the news.

That instinct, treat the relationship as the product, followed her through three separate careers and 29 years in Calgary.

From Small Town Ontario To Discovery Ridge

Barrie trained in dental hygiene and ran retail clothing shops in northern Ontario before relocating to Calgary in 1997 with limited resources. She spent over a decade in dental hygiene before opening her own practice in 2009, starting out of her Discovery Ridge home before it grew into a full commercial clinic with multiple hygienists on staff. She ran it for close to ten years, then stepped back from day to day operations as the leadership underneath her grew capable of running it without her.

That is the pattern across everything Barrie has built. Start small, stay close to the client, hand it off once it can stand on its own.

A School, Then A Film Company

In 2012 she bought a small Montessori school her own daughter attended, then spent over a decade turning it into a nature based program serving close to 200 families in west Calgary. In between, she opened and later sold a boutique flower shop in Aspen Landing. In 2023 she launched LHI Productions, a sharper turn than the others, but one she describes in the same terms as everything before it. “I love trying different industries,” she has said of the move.

None of these ventures share an industry. They share a method. Build the relationship first, let the business model follow, and do not confuse being busy with being finished.

The Common Thread Is Not Ambition, It Is Follow Through

Alberta’s economy runs on people who take a swing at something with no guarantee it works, then take another swing when it does not look like the first one at all. Barrie’s version of that is a dental office, a school and a production company built by the same person inside three decades, in the same city, without abandoning any of the three when the next one started.

That is a harder trick than it sounds. Most people who succeed once stay in the lane that worked. Barrie’s story argues the opposite, that the lane matters less than whether you actually show up for the people inside it.

What is the Calgary business story you think deserves more attention than it gets?
