For a lot of people, energy security sounds like a phrase from a policy paper. In Alberta it is nothing of the sort. It is whether the furnace holds at -30 in February. It is whether the hospital keeps its lights and its ventilators running through a cold snap. It is whether the barn stays warm and the water keeps moving. Out here, reliable power is not a luxury good. It is the difference between an ordinary winter day and an emergency.
That is why the make-up of Alberta’s grid matters more than the slogans around it. The province now has more than 23,000 megawatts of generating capacity, with natural gas providing the lion’s share at over 14,000 megawatts, renewables around 8,400, and coal finally at zero. Gas is the backbone that holds the system up when the wind drops and the sun sets on the shortest, coldest days of the year. That is not a talking point. It is physics and weather.
Reliability is the whole job
The grid operator has been candid that the cushion is tightening. Generator outages, natural gas supply disruptions, and the swings that come with weather-dependent power are all pulling at the margin, and grid alerts have become a part of Alberta winters that nobody should shrug off. The hardest moments are not summer afternoons. They are January evenings when demand peaks, the temperature plunges, and a high-pressure system parks over the province and stills the wind for days at a time. Solar is doing little at 5 p.m. in the dark of winter. That is exactly when a cold-climate grid earns its keep or fails the people on it.
Renewables have a real place in the mix, and Alberta has built plenty of them, more quickly than almost anywhere in the country. The point is not to sneer at wind and solar. The point is that they are not dispatchable. You cannot order more wind on the coldest night of the year. A serious system pairs cheap renewable energy when it is available with firm, controllable power that is there on command, and in Alberta that firm power is overwhelmingly natural gas.
New demand is coming whether we are ready or not
The pressure is about to grow. More than 30 large projects have asked to connect to the grid, representing as much as 21 gigawatts of potential demand, and the system operator has set an interim cap of 1,200 megawatts for these big loads before 2028 precisely to protect reliability and existing customers. The same data centre boom that could pour billions into the province will pull enormous new load onto the system. That is a reason to be more serious about firm power, not less, and a reason to insist those projects bring their own generation rather than leaning on the supply that keeps rural homes warm.
Handled well, that new demand can actually strengthen the system, because it gives developers a reason to build new gas generation that adds capacity for everyone. Handled badly, it becomes a bidding war for a fixed supply, and the people who lose that war are the households and small towns that were here first. The difference is policy, and Alberta is writing it right now.
Affordable and reliable are the same fight
There is a tendency to treat reliability and affordability as separate files. They are not. A grid that cannot meet peak demand does not just risk blackouts, it sends prices spiking exactly when families can least absorb them. Keeping a strong base of dependable generation is what smooths those spikes and keeps the monthly bill predictable. Energy security and a manageable power bill are two views of the same thing, which is a system built to serve the people who depend on it.
Keep the lights on first
There is a sensible path through all of this. Build out reliable generation, value the gas fleet that already does the heavy lifting, add renewables and storage where they genuinely help, and never lose sight of the fact that the grid exists to serve people, not to win an argument about energy theory. In a province where winter can kill, keeping the power on is not the boring part of the job. It is the job, and any plan that forgets it has failed before it starts.
